A Man For Some Seasons

I’ve heard there are men for all seasons, but I’m not one of them.  On the other hand, I fully recognize and observe the three major ones: Fishing, Bird Hunting and Aztecs.  At this time of year, latter two of those seasons overlap, making for difficult choices between following our springer spaniels in pursuit of ringnecks – or following my beloved Aztecs.

I’ve not written much about the Aztecs lately, but last night’s big football win over the Boise State Broncos is a good place to start.  My tough and gritty underdog Aztecs once again proved their mettle against a very good and well-coached team, and that’s a pretty apt description of the Aztecs as well.

The win improved their record to 7-4.  After starting out 0-3, this team has won seven of their last eight games and by my calculations punched a ticket for their fourth bowl game appearance in as many years.  It’s a precedence for post season play that began with Brady Hoke who parlayed his rebuilding of the Aztecs into his dream job at Michigan, and has continued under Rocky Long who arrived with Hoke to rebuild the team’s defense.

Save for a couple of very disappointing last minute losses to Oregon State and undefeated Fresno State, the Aztecs would be sitting at a pretty gaudy 9-2 right now and ranked in the top 20 with losses to only Ohio State and Eastern Illinois who have just one loss between them.

Next up for the Aztecs will be the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, a team that has been playing very well of late and cannot be overlooked.  Win or lose, this Aztec team will be rewarded with a December bowl game.  Depending on the location, I might be facing the difficult decision of whether I’ll be wearing my hunting vest or Aztec gear on that date, and that’s a welcome dilemma around here.
